Angry So I flipped my truck last night now I have a few questions

So a series of unfortunate events happened to me last night resulting in me flipping my truck with the drive that caused me to do so fleeing the scene and leaving me upside down and I only have liability insurance so its up to me.

Thankfully I just got a few scratches and bruises from the ordeal but my truck didn't fare as well. I am pretty sure the stinger on my from bumper save my bacon. It runs and drive the hood barley got a scatch it just doesn't have much for head room.

Question number one is what years of cab can i use for this the obvious choice is another 85 cab but can I use others?

Question two is what is the process of the vin that would be on the new cab if anyone knows this it would help a lot.

I already started pulling stuff apart and put penetrating lube on the cab mounts now I am tracking down a cab.

I have the tools for the job, space to do it, and friends to help. Of course any information you guys have from experience that you could share would help

here are some pics of the damage

That thing looks like it was clean ! ! !

Cab should be your basic 84-88 X-cab.

That sucks about flipping our truck. Doing a cab swap is easier then you think. 84-88 is what you will need. You could use a 2 wheel cab but will need to do a harness swap which is a big job but can be done. I have a thread on doing a harness swap if you need it. Getting a truck with the harness would be so much easier.

Since you have not turned it in on insurance, that will save you a lot of trouble on having to deal with inspections. It would be considered totaled and in most states you have to have the Hiway Patrol to check your work.

Most states go by the VIN on the cab. So you will need a cab with a title and just title it as the truck you are getting the cab from. If it is considered a total then you might have to go thru state inspection again.

I'll be addressing a few things such as rust control on the top of the frame sound deadening etc I will take care of whatever I see and now I can find a cab with out a sunroof so I don't have in cab rust issues also will be tackling all of my electrical gremlins

I snapped some m8 bolts (or whatever they are) which clip things under the cab. Maybe have a few around or some thread tools. But I'm east. Looks like you can sit up under that beast.

to answer your questions.
#1 yes.84-88 extra cab. like Terrys87 stated.
#2 what i would do,and have done aleast 3 times. is take all your indentification plates (VIN) off your wreaked truck and install on donor truck. then you dont need to worry about title from donor truck and vin not matching your frame numbers.etc. all your really doing is replacing sheetmetal. well all of it! with new cab.

Like posted above any 84-88 xtra cab from a 2wd or 4wd will work. There are some differences in the cabs like auto or manual and fuel injected or carbed. Also there were a couple different manual trannys used so the holes for the shifters will be different.

Swapping your harness into the new cab is a couple hour job, not hard at all or even a big job especially since you are doing a cab swap anyway.

What engine tranny combo do you have?

Also I'm not sure the legalities of the vin swap to the new cab but I think in my state at least the DOL goes by the vin of the frame. So say you get a later model cab you would keep the '85 vin number.

Edit: I just noticed you're in WA also. Just call up the DOL on the vin situation.

so how are you going to deal with the VIN if that thing has no title?
I am always leery of vehicles that have no title..."it was my wheeling, I didn't bother to register' story flies with me about as far as I could throw the truck.
swapping VIN plates is a tad illegal from what I understand..

If I have to I will swap the vins out but the guy says he washed the title and reg but has the pieces and I have my ways I know the right people but its not really an issued as its gonna be for parts only I will run the vin to make sure its not stolen. It will all get figured out but #1 priority is getting a decent cab and get this process going before it gets any colder out

So was it in his name? If so why not just do a lost title application?

Anyway if you do get it there are some differences in the cabs. The shifter cutouts will need some work and there is no hole for the clutch master on the auto cabs.

$1500 for a complete and I'm assuming running '85 toy xtra cab that doesn't look beat to hell seems a little off to me. I know it says parts only but If I had that truck and was wanting to sell it I'd figure out how to title it in my name and sell it for a lot more.
