Rough shifting and bad mileage.

I have a 1985 automatic efi 4runner and I have a couple problems. I've noticed it's been getting horrible mileage and shifting into drive or reverse from park is pretty hard. After the car is moving the shifting seems smooth and on time. I adjusted my kickdown cable and the throttle cable is adjusted properly. I suspect now the issue is tps or iacv. I was wondering what you guys think it could be. Would you guys recommend I try to adjust the tps or just buy a new one? I'm more to this forum. Let me know what you think! Thanks

What do you mean by "shifting into drive or reverse from park is pretty hard" exactly?

"Kick down" is actually a line pressure cable, you typically should never (need to) touch it.

Is it physically difficult to move the shift lever?
Start with the simple things. Inspect the shifter linkages. Disconnect the shifter from the transmission, is it the linkage or the transmission that's tough to move.

Is it banging when you shift? Inspect the drive shaft joints.

Sorry I should have been more specific. So the actual moving of the shifter is easy. when I shift into drive, the whole truck jumps forward and I can hear a big clunk. The same goes for reverse. I've checked the drive shaft and linkage and it will is fine. I also greased the driveshaft as well. The drive shaft is solid and has no play in it either.

its easy to shift with the shifter. It just jumps forward and gives off a good loud clunk. And then there is the bad mileage part. From what I've researched, I've come to thinks it's the tps. But I'm not 100% sure

The 79 transmission is more than likely a L43 sideshifter 4 speed. Not the best choice

That usually happens when your RPM's are too high, so try adjusting idle between 750-800 rpm's and that's gonna smooth things out, i know what you're describing when you shift into either D or R it's kind of hard, also check your trans. mount it might be ready for replacement by now.
