I'm the proud new owner of an 84 4runner which is in need of a clutch replacement. 1st off I know nothing about Toyota's. So, is it easier to pull the transmission and transfer case together or seperately. I am doing this in my garage without the aid of a lift or anything except basic hand tools, jack stands and a small hydraulic jack. If pulled together can the combination be handled by 1 person?

 

i pulled both just using a floor jack it wasnt to bad i had help taking it apart but i put it back together myself without to much trouble but its alot quicker and easier with help. and the starter blots to the bell housing instead of the motor which still doesnt make sense to me but u have to take it off to separate the 2

If you can rent a tranny jack or one of those floor jack adapters DO IT!! lol! You don't have to but it'll make life a little easier! I pulled the tcase off and then dropped the tranny by myself with some jackstands. I put it back in as a whole and, well, that was interesting! LOL!!

 

when I pull the tranny which it seems to be alot these days I get all the bell housing bolts, un bolt the drivelines, unbolt the shifters, undo the electrical stuff, undo the Speedo, then support the transmission and transfer with a tranny jack and get the 8 x member bolts out shift the tranny jack back to clear the the input shaft from the clutch assemble and drop it down to the ground.....now I will pretend I am a Chilton's manual....to REASSEMBLE repeat steps in reverse LOL

Well GL anyways have fun with the two upper 17mm bolts on the top of bellhousing

 

Does it take a special tool to get those two 17 mm bolts out? Would air tools help, not that I have any?!

 

you need a TON of extensions and a wibblewabble at the end for the 2 top bolts.

goto harbor freight and pick up their $120 tranny jack.. so worth its weight in gold compared to bench pressing the tranny out or trying to use a regular floor jack

 

17mm short 12 sided,wobbler, and extension done deal air is good but not needed

 

Sorry, forgot to mention that I'm in Fairbanks, AK and there is no Harbor Freight here. And shipping would cost more than the jack itself.

 

then go to a farm outlet or something you need a cheap tranny jack makes it alot easyier but if you have a second or 3rd pair of hands and a few floor jacks you can make it work

 

When you get to the pilot bushing, cut up chunks of wax, feed into it, and hammered in with the alignment tool will push the bearing out.

I think I use a 24-36'' of extensions to get to the top two bolts, and about the sdame to get the starter bolt, and nut off, coming in from the front end.

Good time to change the rear main seal, and the front transmission seal.

 

Just use paper, less of mess and easier to clean.

 

wtf is a wibble wabble lol, i benched the tranny bellhousing and tcase on my tacoma talk about a pain in the ass this should be lighter though hopefully i dont want to spend the money for a tranny jack...
