rear disc questions

Hey everyone, I have an '82 with an ifs rear axle installed on it.

I've been eyeing the ebay kit for $28 that uses the solid front rotors and calipers from a 1st gen.

I can't find any info on what will have to be done with the backing plate for the drum brakes. I've heard you can grind it off, ive heard you have to pull the axle shafts and grind it off.

I've even read that they have to be pressed off.

what has to be done?

I hope I can just grind the whole thing off without having to pull the axleshafts.

I replaced wheel bearings and took the backing plate off.

Takes a press that is long enough to fit the axle.

Good point to check rear axle bearing. The semi-floater design of our rear axles means axle will seperate from housing if bearing fails. If you still have your old housing you can make a jig to press bearing out and back in.
