Rear Axle
I have a 85 4Runner SR5 22RE automatic, I was wondering how to identify the rear axle so i could put in a detroit tru trac limited slip. There are a number of different styles of axle according to this. link to tru trac install instructions
So i was wondering if someone knew how to tell the difference.

Well, what I can tell you is that its most likely got 438 gears as thats what factory automatics came with. The standard tranny trucks got 410 or 411 or something.

Wow that chart is wierd, I dont know what they mean by small or large hub.
Where are you planning on getting your locker from? Most places just offer a locker for a Toyota 8" diff. I've never heard of an 84 or newer yota with 4:38 gears either. I know they had 4:10's, 4:30's and 4:56's tho.

Your gear ratio does not matter. You have a Toyota 8in. rear axle from an '85. That's all they need to know. The large and small hub variances are only for the front axle. If you are still concerned about it just buy it from a place like 4wheel Parts Wholesalers and they will get you what you need and usually cheaper too.
