rattle after new timing chain
#23
wasn't aware that a 22-re came in the short block version in these trucks, but I guess it's a possibility that an early celica motor was put into it? We don't know the year of the truck though, but you do have a good point.

I know this is a little late but if you over torqued the tensioner bolts it will keep the tensioner from working right and make it seem like it is getting low oil pressure. Also the oil pumps are self priming, you really don't have to pack them with grease, it is just good measure to prime them. Hope you get it figured out.

not only should you make sure your deck height on the block, but it has to have a matching head(early style on an early block, or a later style on a later block) you cant interchange the different types of heads and blocks they have to match or you will run into weird problems with chain slack. i would make sure you got the right kit. i have no idea if removing a link would fix your problem if you did have the longer chain, honestly i would just invest in the right chain and make sure its the right one before you buy it. if you ask the guys at engbldr they will give you more than enough correct information. those guys are awesome as you probably already know. good luck!

hey thanks for the link, i think ive come to a conclusion on what the problem is. I think that the head has been surfaced before and the took off a lot of material making it all out of whack. When i di the timing chain i also did a hg, but the old one didnt have a shim(But it had the same rattle as after the new tchain) Think im gonna have to do another head gasket. Unless i can get a link out...
