Probably dumb, but I just got a great deal on some 40s, what will I break?
I know running these tires may not be the best idea, so they might not last long, but I just got a great deal, $400, on a set of 40x17 on 15" 3.5" back spaced rims. My suspension is fine for tires this size, especially after all the rust trimming I did. What I'm concerned about is how long I can get out of the rest of the truck. Will standard crossover steering be enough, or will I need hydro assist to turn these huge tires? I know 5.29s are a must, so no driving until I get those installed. Should I run em, or sell em for some 35s, as originally planned on?

Sell them. Too big imho...
Just because it's a good deal doesn't mean you have to buy them. Just plain impulsive...
Post them on www.craigslist.com maybe someone is looking for bigger tires has a smaller set you can trade for you never know.

the question is what kind of 40's and what quality? Chances are good that the seller marked them down for a reason. You may end up with something you can't sell easily.

You will need Longfields, Dual Cases, 5.29's, ARP Studs, Hydro Assist and HighSteer. If you plan on just driving it down the street the 5.29's will do.

It is nice to have the same pounds per square inch as a 800CC four wheeler!!!!
i love mine and can run 2psi all the way around, even on the street!
and remember at the low pressures a 40 isnt really 40. my 39.5's measure in at 37.8" at 2 psi and little bulge on the bottom.

RUN THEM!!!! i have a 84 with 39.5x15 TSL's with stock 4.10s, stock axles, and stock case. i have been running it this way until i can afford the 5.29's and v-6 swap but it does pretty good, not fast by anymeans but i can hit 60 in 3rd and cruise down the highway, and 1st low still works for what i do, not many rocks up here.
as for steering i have never had a problem with the stock TG kit

Now that's the kind of answer I needed to hear! I already have dual cases, Hy steer and 5.29s are coming very soon, and I'm very light on the skinny pedal, so I'll do the longs when I break a birf. I think I'm gonna at least give em a try. If it doesn't work out, I'll sell em and get some 35s.

I probably am preaching to the coir but on mine i had to adjust my steering stops in to keep it from hillint the leafs, this also helps the longevity of the birf's. I assume you will have to do the same. i would be curious to see what your tires actually measure out to when you get them mounted and see how low a pressure you can go! like i said before i run 2psi and the side walls barely bulge on my bias tsl's

Mounted em up last night just to see what I'll be dealing with as far as fit goes. I definitely need to swap in my 89 rear axle for the extra width. Currently, the rear leaf springs are about 3/4" from the tire sidewall. For the front, I have no problem trimming my fenders, or just removing them, and I'm going to build a drop/forward mount hanger to get just a little more firewall clearance. I've decided to build around these tires and see what happens. I know I have a long way to go, but they are so burly, and that's what I want out of my truck. Poser shots...

This summer we worked on getting 40's to fit on basically the same body you have. Some firewall work and rear fender work will probably need to be done.

here is the only pic i have of mine with 39.5 tsl's:
I did RUF's and moved the axle forward 3.5" and didn't have to do any fire wall mods other than trimming the seam but that was just to remove a sharp edge.
You might want to look into a tire groover for those tires. if you cut the center in about 1" incriments then they will work twice as good! my buddy had those for a while and we did it to his and worked much better.
I will try and get better pics this weekend for fender cutting ideas

Tub the firewall to the body mount and tub the rear fender well and run them. Buy some Longfields and build your axle and you'll be fine. I got 39.5 Iroks now and when they wear out Ill be going to 42 Iroks.

you know i used to swear by my 31x11.5 ltb's until i got a really good deal on the 39.5's (600 brand new!!!!) and now would not go back!!!! i mean when you put the same pressure on the ground as a big four wheeler it makes a difference!!!! also i measured and i have the better ground clearance under the diff in my truck as a fulsize sterling w/ 44 boggers!!!!

Yup, 40's are WAY too much tire for a Toyota axle or overkill
40's are great, but you will have to work to make them fit and dish out some $$$ to make sure the front axle holds together (ARP studs, Longfields, Hub gears, Hydro assist, etc...........)
