Please HELP my low beams quit working

My low beams stopped working on my 84 4runner. O have high beams when I engage them. The high beam indicator illuminates when my switch is in both high or low beam. Replaced both sealed headlights and still have the problem. Any suggestions?

It’s most likely your switch. Unless someone has found a good aftermarket replacement, people usually say the don’t last that long (cheap aftermarket ones). Go over to 4crawler.com and find his write up on taking apart the column to get to it. I just went through this and I broke a solder while taking it out, so be careful and check all the joints. Good luck. You should go ahead and upgrade your headlight harness as well so the switch won’t have to carry as much of a load going forward.

Thanks for the tip Austintaco. So you don’t think its a relay issue, as in the low beam relay. Also noticed tonight that now the high beam indicator stays on whether its in high beam or low beam mode. But still no low beam lights work.

That’s the problem, IIRC, with how our trucks are wired. There is not a relay, just a fuse and the switch takes the full load and why the contacts wear out. Check out 4crawler’s info for deeper dive. You can buy the plug and play harnesses from many dealers now as well. I had one on my truck and it worked great, allowing for higher wattage bulbs, but the dip˟˟˟˟ YouTube mechanic that attempted to do my engine swap tossed it. I just finished putting in another one as well as fixing my combo switch.

I hope this isn’t the problem you are having but when mine was doing that my harness got lunched where it runs through the passenger side fender. Something got in between the tire and under the fender in that area and did some serious harness damage. Even caused some wiring to melt in the dash. It was a real nightmare to replace. I hope this is not your issue. Maybe take a good look at the harness in that area.
