Picked up this 85 Sr5 xtra cab.
TvaQy
I stumbled across this truck a year ago while house shopping. I ended up talking to the guy several times within that year and we finally agreed on a price, picked it up Friday. It sat for 2 years without being driven because he thought something happened to the engine (heard loud rattling noise), I brought it home, found out the fuel pump was bad, drained the old gas and it fired up! But it smokes, believe it's burning oil, Ran a compression test and the results were 150, 50!!, 145, 150. I ran the engine for bit and noticed when I removed the oil dipstick smoke would plum out of the tube??? Looks to be a fun project!

not neccasry, that truck been sitting for two years without being crank. I would drive it awhile, around the block, to the store, keep close to the house, maybe that ring will seat back it or you j=have a bad valve

I've thought about that, it'll be sometime before I can even think about getting a rebuild. Will also be doing a leak down test this weekend.

Oh I will definitely be keeping the SR5 look to this, one of my main reasons for buying it, your right they are getting hard to come by. I knew when I saw this it was a diamond in the rough.
Right now my plans are to slowly restore the truck,
-make it a reliable dd/light trail truck
-replace any broken/missing parts
-install a mild lift, looks to have add a leaf up front and blocks in the rear
-keep a mostly stock appearance, no bumpers, sliders etc.
-Then hopefully have it repainted the stock color and restripe it (someday)

I wouldnt condemn the piston rings just yet. Could be the exhaust/intake valve face, might need a valve job, or just cleaned real well and "lapped" (mild cutting abrasive spun around the valve face. if you do get a valve job, make sure to have it done right (3 angle) you dont want a straight face valve job done, itll suck the power out and make the head run really hot on the exhaust valve. Good luck with the project. Nice truck!

White smoke-coolant leak into engine. if it was blue smoke it would be bad rings, oil consumption. Youve probably got a bad head gasket man. there could be a "bridge" of the gasket blown out or burned or cracked, leaking coolant into one of the cylinders, AND leaking out pressure with ur pressure tests. HeaD gaskets are common failures. Check that.

Ok, i see. I was on the assumption you said it was white smoke, in which case it would be coolant loss. Blue smoke is oil, or a rich fuel mixture, your pressure tests make it seem like it would be rings. Rings are not too expensive, but kindof a biotch to replace, gotta drop ur bottom end, and unbolt the piston from the connecting rod on the crank and push it up through the cylinder (your gonna have to take the head off). Your best option is to yank the engine and put her on a stand, SO much easier to work on. Depending on your cylinder wall condition, you may need to bore it out and put an oversize piston/rings in it. All that is just based on what the condition is.
