parking lights come on by themselves

On my '85 4X truck the parking lights have begun to come on by themselves. If I turn them on and then off again at the switch they go off, but come back on in a few minutes, but not immediately-front and rear. Have to remove the fuse to keep them off permanently. Anyone ever have this situation?
Thanks!

Not me, but looks like a case of shorts somewhere on a hot wire in the circuit. Maybe trace from the parking light on the wiring towards the interior and look for any worn or exposed areas on the insulation in contact with live wiring...good luck

Yup, short somewhere...
Tail light relay contacts shorting, or
Wire (Red-Blk in 1988 schem.) between tail light relay pin11 and switch shorting to ground, or
Combo switch contacts shorting.

1988 lights but probably same as 1985.

For the record the problem was in the switch. I removed the plastic cowling around the steering column and blew out decades of crap with an air compressor. So far that has done the trick, but keeping my eye on it as looks like to replace the switch assembly requires pulling the steering wheel.
Cheers!

Thanks for posting what you found!

You can find quite a bit of dirt in these old trucks, even the clean ones.

You may also have dirty switch contacts that an air compressor may not be able to remove. Post back here if the problem returns.

Jake,
Yea, there could still be dirt on the contacts. Will be watching for sure. Thinking about spraying something in there that might melt some of the grunge off, but that could be counterproductive.
