noise from transmission

Since about a month, my truck has become louder and doesn't drive smooth. I think it is the transmission. I showed to my mechanic and he couldn't figure out from a short drive and he said it is fine, but I am sure somethign happened because the noise started rather suddenly. It seems it makes noise most in 5th gear, followed by 3rd 2nd and 1st, while 4th is the smoothest with least amount of noise. ANy clues what should I check?

I just checked the manual transmission fluid in the differential and it was fine.

About my truck, it is a 1985 4runner with turbo, It has 33s but the last owner said it was not re-geared. I always get advise that it should be regeared. May be I will post as another thread.

THanks!

When was the last time you changed the gear oil in the transmission and the transfer case?

I had this truck for more than a year, and I have never changed the gear oil in the transmission or transfer case. The noise is difficult to describe, but I will try: The noise is not rhythmic, it is rather erratic or random, as if something is loose and being thrown around inside a metallic container. Like I said earlier, it started from no noise to noisy transmisson suddenly. First I thought it was only in 5th gear (because I was driving on the highway) but then realized it is in all gears (except 4th is relatively low in noise).

my truck makes kind of a whirring noise in 5th only. My mechanic said its a bearing going out, and that if it starts making grinding noises to consider a rebuild.

i had the same problem

i have a 84 yota truck it was poping out of first gear and it was making noise in 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 5th. 4th was quiet like nothing was wrong.I brought it to mr. transmission and they said it was the center shaft or something i'll have to look at the reciept but it cost almost 600.00 to fix i haven't put it back in the truck yet because they lost my clip to hold my release bearing to the arm but its suposted to be fixed.they check them for free so if you can find one bring it and let them check it.

you need to gear that truck if your running 33's. its expensive, but if i were you, i would go down to 31's. those are the biggest you can run on stock gearing safely.
