Newbie with Transmission ID ?'s

So I bought this poor little '84 X-Tra cab with a 22R that has all kinds of issues. I had to replace the timing chain, no prob. I even researched and forund a great deal for a kit with all new parts- oil pump, water punp, timing cover, chain, sprockets, tensioner, and rubber caoted steel chain guides for ~ $150.00 (e-bay) I had the head resurfaced (it had to be shaved .020) put it all back together and it runs strong. But having tranny issues, popping out of first and rattling in neutral. I will replace plastic shifter bushings with Marlin upgrades. However I am uncertain which trans I have. It's either a G52 of a G54. How can I tell the difference? I found a blog that said if I take the inputshaft cover off and find bearing # 32TM03NX (this is in mine) then it is a G54. Looking for a experianced inputs. Also I think the inputshaft pilot bearing surface is shot and causing the rattle I am hearing. Where can I find a new inputshaft, anybody have one lying around and want to sell it?

Ok that was a bit long-winded. Checked out Marlin and found answer. Still looking for G54 input shaft or complete trans. Would a G52 input shaft work?

I had an 85 that I believe had an ID tag with this info. Marlin's site is great.

BTW- I'm also a geologist. Got my degree in So. Cal. at SDSU.

Nice to meet yoy gonenomad. Yeah the truck has been monkied with so I don't know what's right and what's wrong. Tag on firewall says it has a G52, but input bearing is G54 according to Marlin. It is a small world, I live in north county S.D. and attend CSUF. It's a long haul but mass transit is pretty good here.
