The transfer of energy between handle and latch is just a piece of wire you can manipulate with a pair of pliers.
2) Relocate your handle (I'm assuming we're talking interior) to the bottom of the door (like a Datsun 240z if you've ever seen one) or at the rear of the door (a passenger side 4Runner door will have a stock setup for this. It was used for back seat passengers).
If you wanted to go with option 2 you could get the mechanical linkages and/or a complete left side door from austrailia with the same linkages as we have on the right side door here.

And to answer the question about what Marlin used to open his doors. He has a "button" about the size of a 50 cent piece. It's located on the top of the rear incline of the cutout. Just forward of the rear frame. I circled it in Yellow. You can see it pretty well in this pic. You can also kind of see it in the other pic posted above. Look right in front of Marlin's shoulder/arm.

But I'm not sure I like the cloth at the bottom, I'm thinking clear all the way down, that way I retain most of the added visibility of half-door. And I think they will look that much cleaner too.

That's kind of what I had in mind with my suggestion...
