Let me pick your brain - 22RE

Last month I blew a head gasket on my 1985 22 RE engine. I pulled the head and found the head cracked in a couple of places. The local machine shop welded the head and machined it back down. New guides and seats with new valve stem seals.

I replaced the head gasket, timing chain set with guides, new oil pump and everything looked good. I did not do anything to the lower block - it has 128,000 miles.

The runner starts good and has good power - but smokes badly at idle. I am not loosing coolant. I did a compression test today and expected to find low compression on one or more cylinders. Nope - all cylinders are 165 - 170

I'm going to attempt to borrow a leak down tester tomorrow. Can I have bad rings and still have compression this good ? No knocking and no loss of power - just smokes - mainly at idle speeds.

Thanks in advance for the input.
