hello,

im putting a LCE pro distributor onto a freshly rebuilt 22r engine and am a little confused here. I am trying to learn and do everything myself but need a little guidance. If it matters, and I don’t think it does, this is a carbureted laser block.

The manual for my ‘81 says to set the timing at 8 degrees before tdc and install the distributor with the rotor point up. Upon seating of the distributor it will rotate to the 10 o’ clock position. I pulled the new distributor out of the bag and slide it in. When I removed the cap my rotor is sitting at the 5 o’ clock position.

Does this mean that the engine was not at tdc and is 180 degrees out? Is this the advance of the distributor? Or was I supposed to remove the cap and set the rotor to the 12 o’ clock position before I installed it?

In my simple mind, it would make sense that I do not have the engine at the correct timing before the installation. It would seem strange for LCE to ship someone a product that is not ready to be installed.

Roger that. That means the timing advance is internal to the distributor that LCE makes and I will install it just like a normal distributor. What are the chances it fool the smog guy?

Also, just for knowledge, if I left it installed as is, my engine would be misfiring like crazy and maybe not even run?
