Hub Rebuild thread

Well here is the start of my hub rebuild thread..

I have ordered

Marlin HD seals
Marlin Heavy Duty Shifter Seats
Marlin Heavy Duty Shifter Socket

All-Pro KNUCKLE REBUILD KIT
All-Pro Front Wheel Bearing Kit

Rock-Ring Knuckle Felt Protectors
Back Plate Eliminator Kit

so I still need a brass drift, fish scale and 54mm socket.
and Grease..

This is all to get the rig ready to drive from San Diego to Big Sur with no issue..

After this I am planning on new timing chain, metal guides, water pump, oil pump.

I made this comment in another recent thread but it didn't seem to get any response. The birfield joints (and the trunion bearings) need moly-fortified grease. In the other thread, the OP had clearly used red Mobil 1 grease in the birfields. I'm sure you can get away with that but it isn't what is specified in the FSM. Both Valvoline and Amsoil make an excellent moly-fortified grease.

Good luck with the rebuild. It isn't that hard, just messy!

I did see that...about the moly.. I'll be sure to get some moly fortified stuff..

Probably Valvoline, easier and cheaper to get then Amsoil

i hope you have a better time with your rebuild than i had installing my longs. i had to replace 4 mangled knuckle studs, 3 stripped hub studs, and one left handed tie rod end. you should also buy some of marlins inner axle seals. they are awesome.

As far as using this thread to rebuild I would stick with the pros..
http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/mainte...nd/solid_axle/
http://www.birfield.com/~morgan/tech/axle/index.html
http://www.4crawler.com/4x4/CheapTri...eRebuild.shtml

Hopefully with the amount of grease on there I won't have any issues..always the plan

I'm in the process of rebuilding my 85 axle as well. It's going pretty well. I got the Marlin inner axle seals in for sure. I also did the Trail Gear knuckle gussets and a ring gear guard. That piece of armor seems very important because the front of the axle housing is pretty vulnerable to rocks. There was already a gouge in my housing where the ring gear fits. I beat it out with the brass bar and a hammer. The metal is pretty thin there.

God I love this website. Kick ass people and kick ass information. Great links all. Makes the impending work doable by even a half assed wrench like myself.
