head bolts and new head

bought the head from a fella that recommended retorquing the head bolts after engine heats up to operating tempeture and then doing another retorque at 500 miles, just want to hear your thoughts. i also like to add question 'bout the retorque process is it just checking for the 58ftlbs or is lossing the bolt and retorquing the bolt completely over

It's a shame that after this many hours you have no more responses to your question than this. I thought this site was a more helpful site than that. No need to retorque those bolts. But, you can recheck them if you like, but do NOT loosen them and then re tighten them.
Hope this helps

Oh loosen up.

Yes, you want to retourque the bolts. Especially after the first warm up, but even again after the first 500 or so miles. In fact I've heard from people who retourque them every time they've got the valve cover off.

I agree with aalan, do NOT loosen them or you will mix oil and coolant. Retorquing is meant to tighten back up bolts that may have stretched, loosened because of the vibration of the engine, so you want to make sure they are the right tightness. The service manual tells you to retorque the head bolts.

Sorry 83, and thanks. I didn't know that checking the torque was necesary or recommended. I'll make sure to recheck mine after a few more breakin hours.

Ok good I'm glad that didn't piss you off. Telling somebody who I don't know to chill is like that one time I told a female friend of mine, when she become slightly defensive, "well you don't have to get defensive about it"...yes she went from defensive to downright pissed off real fast.

Sometimes people just aren't very responsive to questions around here...who knows why.

LOL. Seems as though you dealt with ONE TIME what I deal with on a daily basis. It's all because of that damn wedding 20 years ago.

MINE!

While your in there I'd reset the valves as well. I did my head back in Feb and my valves are tapping more than they should. Sometime this week I'm going to regap them and retorque the head.
I know, I should of doe this a while back but just have not had the time.
