grease on floor boards

Hey all, i picked up a 500$ 1st gen about a week ago. Been working on it cleaning out rust/cutting out rot.

Well i moved into the interior striped it out and here is my question.

On the floorboards up front where your feet would rest both passenger and driver there is like about a 1/4 inch raised area that is hard and painted on the driver side. on the passenger side, it is like just muck. It is still hard enough to be a total pain in the ass to scrape out, but soft enough that my passengers feet will get covered in it.

I was just wondering if anyone could fill me what that is, why its turning into grease, and if you have any tips on removing it? i plan on just hurculinering the inside, so if its there to prevent floor board cancer i have no problem removing it, just wondering if there is some trick to taking it out or i should just go back in there and scrape slowly.

i tried searching also but had no luck so sorry if this is like the 100th time someone has asked.

Photos? Can't think of anything like that off the top of my head. Probably somebody just dumped grease there by mistake. I don't know what would be leaking there..

ok pics taken:

here is the driver side, where the "seal" seems to still be hard and in good shape.

You can see the perimiter in that picture, its goes up on the tranny bump and all the way around.

Here is what it looks like on the passenger side:

i sprayed some paint over it to see if i could just seal it off to keep it off peoples shoes, but you can see where i scraped at it, that whole side, that "seal" is just gummy and like a giant grease thing, sigh i feel dumb not knowing what its called.

had the same deal in mine before I sprayed bedliner on it. go after it with some acetone or better yet MEK, that stuff works awesome but wear a respirator it will kill your lungs.

I don`t know what its called, but its used by the factory as sound deadener, kind of like dynomat or something like that.

Necro post here, but finally getting around to taking this out to do my bedliner inside.

Was going to just sand blast everything, then found out you can just use dry ice to take this "tar sound deadener" out.

bought 15$ of dry ice, chopped it up, layed it over the floor, waited about 5 mins, then hit it with a hammer and the stuff just shatters and comes up really easy and nice.

Just thought id update incase anyone else is looking for the easiest way to take this ˟˟˟˟ off.
