gearing question

very noob question, and I searched but didn't find a clear enough answer.....

Do front and rear diffs have to be geared the same? I have an '85 and I just bought a 2nd hand 4.88 rear 3rd with a Detroit soft locker. Do I need to get another 4.88 for the front before I can use the 4WD?

Sorry if this is a really novice question, but I appreciate any advice you can offer.

Yes they do, otherwise the drivetrain will spin at a different speed and try to fight itself, resulting in bucking and drivetrain damage.
