fuel tank Q's

Ok, I'm not going to get into WHY someone would do something like this... it makes sense for my project, so please refrain from questioning my sanity

I need to make a fuel injected 4Runner gas tank applicable for a (carbureted) 22R. Can I delete the in-tank pump and just run a drop hose down from the outlet tube at the top? I was thinking I could utilize a universal fuel filter right outside the tank for easy access.

Also, are sending units universal throughout the tank sizes? 84-88 trucks/4Runners came with 14.8 gallon tanks and 17 gallon tanks. I was thinking of upgrading to the 17 gallon and want to know if I require a new sending unit for a 17 gal.

Thanks for any & all help!
