Fuel Pump Issue

..............Hey my brothers' got an 85 extra cab with the EFI and his fuel pump went out. I guess it's in the tank and they need to buy an intallation kit and a bunch of other bull, anyway the mech says it will cost about $600 when it's all said and done?!?!?!?! Is this true? Can't you mount an aftermarket pump outside the tank or something else. Please let me know anything you guys might know, any alternatives or how hard it is to do yourself, there's not much in the manual we have so any advice would be greatly apprectiated! Thanks for your time........TIM

The fuel pump IS in the tank on both my EFI 85 4Runners the Fuel Filter is under the hood on the side of the block...PITA to change (the fuel filter NOT the pump) had to remove the starter to get at the bolts to loosen the clamp. Anyhow just changed the fuelpump myself a month or so ago. NO need to drop the tank(on the 4runner) there is an access panel under the back seat. Just removed the bolts access panel bolts, disconnected the electrical plug, removed the bolts on the tank and pulled it out. New pump cost $100 at local discount parts store. The pump comes with a new pickup filter, rubber bushings and clips. Toyota wanted over $250 for just the pump! Put everything back and started it up. Been running great ever since.
