Dual Alternators on an '84?
Hey guys!
So, on every Toyota I've owned so far, I've had to replace the alternator at least once.
After my most recent death of an alternator, I finally decided to bite the bullet and start the GM alternator conversion.
Today I got my hands on a 105amp 15si, got the clip with 2 wires on it, fabbed up some custom mounting hardware, and mounted it in place.
I was considering doing what others have done and bypassing, or cutting out the external regulator, but I was thinking I could splice the GM alternator after the regulator and run them both!?
I'm not very familiar with the '84's wiring as I have been spoiled, and have only owned 22r's with internally regulated alternators.
I have done quite a bit of reading on these swaps, and searched ALOT but these 84's seem to have a funky charging system setup.
I took some pictures of what I'm dealing with:
Coming off the alternator pigtail (Black ground wire not shown):
The pigtail splitting off into the regulator, and other clips and such... :
If anyone has any insight as to whether this is doable, or not I would really appreciate it!! I apologize ahead of time if I am getting anything wrong, I'm a little new to the electrical side of these trucks.

Okay so after looking through a bunch check of wiring diagrams I found this, which looks to be right!!
I added my idea of what would work as a piggy-back setup in red.
If I mount a switch on the ignition/field wire could I just run the alternator on command via in cab switch? Will the factory charging system be effected you think?
This is a 1984 22R motor I'm working on by the by.

Well, after talking to an "alternator specialist" from a reputable company i decided to run a toggle switch on the Field/Signal Wire.
Now under regular use/when it works, i can still run my factory alternator in its original configuration, but have the 15si on a switch on the dash for running lights, winch, inverter, ect.
As it sits right now, i am still waiting for my factory alternator to come in (Should be here today) but have wired my new alternator in as i drew in the diagram and everything seems to be working great! I added a couple washers to line the pulleys up, and to make the tensioner fit without twisting/bending anything.
Overall it was a pretty easy job, just took a bit of fiddling around to make everything work together.
My Idiot Light/E-Brake light is on at the moment but i assume thats becuase the factory alternator
