I've been looking at the FSM for the disassembly of the knuckle and hub. I've gotten to this part and can't figure out how to disconnect the two. I removed the cotter pin and I removed the plug. Any help would be great!

 

You need to remove the rest of the internals behind the plug then it will come apart.

 

ok. That's a help, but now I'm a little confused as to how I'm going to do that. There is just a flat surface if I look into where the plug came out. How do I go about removing the rest?

 

if you have the cotter pin and the plug out all you need is a hammer, a big hammer its a ball thats held in by a 2 piece receptacle, you may be able to move it by cycling the steering wheel, but most likely youve got rust in there and they are seized, the 2 halves of the receptacle install after a small spring get yourself a moog kit from a parts store and it will make perfect sense after you see what comes in the kit, the moog kit also comes with 2 rubber boots for wach end which seal all the water and salt out. pick one up and youll see exactly how it comes apart, kinda hard to explain

So basically I need to take something and place it in the place where the plug came out and then use a hammer it hit it and it will cause that stuff to break loose (I tried the steering wheel before I made this post, no luck)?

thats what the kit loks like, unfortunately its a little pricey but youll probably need it anyway...if you screw the plug half way in you can beat on the end of the plug itself without damaging the center link but you may mushroom the plug a little bit, well, or alot depending on how stuck it is, the other thing you can try is pb blaster and map gas and get it red hot before hitting it. mine is lifted 7 inches and i found a center link on ebay for a lifted truck its z shaped rather than straight and its designed to give you stock steering angles for lifted trucks. i found it on ebay and if i remmber correctly was only about 35 bucks and came with the receptacle bushings springs and plugs but not the rubber boots, if your lifted you might wanna search for that

 

I don't have a lift, so that probably wouldn't work. Will I need one of these kits? So is he plug that is in there still (the piece that is behind the screw plug) just in there from rust? it seems there is a spring behind it that would allow it to come out if it were free. Is this correct? Thanks for all the info.
