Did you color your old shift boot fabric, or make new?

If you made new, do you have a pattern or anything?

So how is the iPod wired up? I'd love to make a very similar setup for my truck.

Wow, that gives me ideas. Looks hot.

Even hotter, though, are those seat covers!

Seriously, great work on the console.

I made the boot using the following steps:

1. I removed the metal hoop from the shifter console.
2. Using a seam ripper, I cut the thread holding the boot to the hoop. I also separated the two boot sections, shifter and t-case lever.
3. I placed a paper bag on top of a piece of Styrofoam. I then stretched the old boot fabric out on the paper bag using pins. I then traced the outline of the boots on the bag and cut out the pattern made from the outline. Be sure to note how the old boot was sewn together.
4. I ordered a few yards of Cordura fabric off EBay. I like this fabric as it looks good and is very durable.
5. Using the patterns, I trace the outline of the boots on the Cordura and then cut.
6. Sew the boots in their original funnel shapes and then together. I was lucky to have a wife who is a great seamstress!
7. Finally, sew the boot back on the hoop and install back in the console.

My iPod plugs directly into the back of my stereo. All I had to do was install the mount in my console and run the cable under the carpet to my stereo.

The PO purchased the truck new in Hawaii, so I assume they have been on the seats for many years. I am slightly superstitious, so I probably keep the Hawaiian thing going with a new set of Wet Okole covers in the near future.

QDOG thanks so much for the link and this thread....I have been wanting to do a custom console for my '93 extra-cab and possibly some speaker pods.

Now I have some good info and confidence to give it a shot!

Awesome console by the way!

Erik,

I never considered making one to sell, so I have not figured out the total cost to make one. I could try to fab another one, keeping track of the cost. It will be a while before I start because I am currently planning/building a gauge pod to mount on my dash.

Sorry for the delay

I have been very busy lately. The console just sits on the floor between the seats. The seatbelts keep it from moving back and forth.

This was the first of two projects I have done, so far. I don't know if my work is worthy of selling at this time, but I will start researching the use of plastics for a future console. This way I should be able to make a mold, allowing me to make more than one. Plus, it should be cheeper to make.

I will be away from my home for a few months, but I will get right back at it when I return. I will let you all know when I have one ready.

What would everyone want build into the console. I'm sure the cup holder would be needed. I'm thinking about not cutting out the radio, switch, and speaker holes. This would allow you to install according to your needs.
