I'm getting a clunking noise in the left front over small bumps. no clunking at all when truning, under power or flexed when wheeling. I feel it in the steering and feel it in the floor. It sounds like loose spindle bearings.

Here's the deal. 88 4 runner with TG SAS, 85 front axle with 3" springs. rebuilt front axle by pro shop before install. new rotors and bearings, new steering box, new high steer with new stabilizer, new bilstens, new front driveshaft and yoks, no cv joint.

I have changed the springs 3 times with 3 different types, all sets are full military wrap.

Is there a chance that the tronion bearings and shims are wrong?
Would this noise come from the Birfs?

Help?

 

Jack the front end up in the air and check that wheel for play. Play at 6-12 o'clock position could be knuckle bearings, play at 3-9 o'clock could be wheel bearings. Also check the spring eye bushings and the spring shackle nuts.

 

New spring and shakle bushing.
Everything in the front suspension is new.
With the wheel jacked up, there is no talerance eigther up & down or back and forth.

 

Is the jack under the driver side rear seat tightened down?
When they get loose they make noise like you describe, the jack makes the noise and you feel the bump in the steering.

 

No jack under the rear sit. I checked to make sure everything is tight.

 

Did you try jacking up the front?
Maybe a engine mount, is tranny is loose, is steering box tight? Its just weird you would feel it in your floor.

The left fender fender was hitting the top of my ARB bumper only over sharp bumps. The vibration was traveling to the front bumper mount at the frame, directly next to the steering box. That's way I felt it in the steering. the vibration carried through the fender to the firewall, that's why I felt it in the floor.
The fender was originaly spaced 1/8" above the bumper, not enough to keep it away from the bumper over the bumps.
I replaced the rubber bushings in the front body mounts and shimed the front bumper down.
No more clunking.
