Can I swap these tranys ?

I have a 1985 4runner 4 cylinder EFI. I blow up the tranny this morning.

I have a spare one from a 1986/87 4x4 truck that is carbureted. Can I swap them out ?

Compatible to the motor, yes. What you have is probably top shift. The other forward shift. You'll have to swap tranny and tcase.

Both have the shifter on the top ? is there much of a difference where they are ?
The spare one was rebuilt by Toyota.
Will the drive shafts be the same length? Or will I need to change them.

I lost reverse. Or I should say is clunks and pops out of gear ?

Top shift tranny has 5 spd shifter - one shifter hole on tranny

Forward shift tranny has 5 spd shifter AND tcase shifter on the tranny - two shift holes on tranny

Tcases for top shift have short shift forks as the tcase shifter is on TOP of the tcase, thus "top shift"

Tcases for forward shift have long shift forks as the tcase shifter is on top of the tranny, thus FORWARD of the tcase.

The existing shifter hole cut in your tranny tunnel for the tcase will be 6" off.

You can convert top shift to forward shift tcase and vice versa.

sorry i don't. just look at the shifters are they closer togeather on one trans? they might be the same and you don't have to worry about the top shift forward shift thing. even if they are different they are still interchangable. the only problem you might have is the shifter hole on the trans tunnel minght be off.

here's the best example i have. the middel shifter is from my old forward shift case. i had to change it out late one night and didn't have time to make a cover plate for the hole. the rear shifter is where a top shift case sits. i only have one t-case the truck has not been doubled yet.

You need to understand that a forward shift tranny and top shift tranny are NOT interchangeable in and of themselves, unless you swap the tcase that goes with them as well.

Will they both work behind a 22R/RE, yes.

With a little searching you should be able to find pictures.

What gear lube do I use ? and best to use ?
Also dose the tranny and t case share the lube or do they both get filled separately ?

Any gear oil will work. Local auto parts. Amsoil. Redline. Tons of options.
Please do some searching man, this ain't hard, but you don't seem to be helping yourself at all.
