Can-Backs coming back

Gents: (double posted for 1st Gens) FYI, I've been in contact with the new owners of Can-Back a couple times over the past few months. Their website says that they are gearing up to become a reliable business with inventory and 24-hour shipment. Dream to afford. Here's the latest

---

We are making the prototypes for this truck this week.

We should be ready for production in about 1.5 months.

Sincerely,

Bryon Hibbetts

Is the price going to hit the $1500.00 range now?
Don't get me wrong, I think they make a great product, but it's not worth the price IMO.
For what it's worth, I think they would sell more(x3) if they lowered the price to a reasonable level.
Volume sales builds Gross...

yep. $1500 for top with rack, $1900 for top/rack/basket. More than 2 grand shipped. For the 4runners that is. Insane. Thats more than I paid to put a top of the line hard shell on my Tacoma.

I really wanted one for my new 85 4runner. But the truck will need lots of things in the coming years, so I opted to get the Downey bikini instead, and hope to see a used Can-Back on eBay someday.

OK, forgive my ignorance here. Besides looking cool and utilitarian what is the point of one of these?

looses weight and you can have the top off...which is really nice, but you can still cover up for weather and deter theives.

ya there is no way you can convince me that its anywere close to worth that kind of cash.

Seems to me like its worth more in the $400-$800 range depending on options.

I don't think it is worth that price either. I found a website that tells you how to make one for $30.00. Think I might try that, but you have to know how to sew...

my Downey Offroad bikini top came monday. 1 hour install, just because I had to futz with the bracket a bit (had to widen a couple of holes on the aluminum bracket to make it fit the bolt pattern). i paid about $180 shipped. sorry no pics, but someone on another thread had some pics to check (search downey bikini). a little steep on cost, but overall i am satisfied. btw, as the other guy mentioned in that thread, downey does not include it in their catalog, but you just call and ask for it as "the bikini top" and they know what you're after.

You can't really even have the top off though right? You can only roll up the sides.
My used STC for $165 seems really good compared to that also, hahaha. The STC you can roll up the sides OR fold the whole thing down. I am very happy with it. I don't remember who said it, but, no mold/mildew issues so far.

That seems like a fair price to me. over $1000 is just insane. I think CanBack does make the best LOOKING 4Runner soft top. STCs are cool 'cause you can fold em back, but damn they're ugly and can't carry a rack. I really enjoy (or I used to on my Wrangler and will soon on my 4Runner) the sides up "safari" top ability. Check out this DIY job:

That top came out great with minimal metal fab skills and he had never sewn before, either. I have the fabric to make my own in August. Stay tuned.....
