Got the third out too. Found out some interesting things too. The front is 5.29's with a locker! The question is, is the locker any good? If you put an axle shaft in it, it will turn the pinion and the other side. Its almost like its permanently engaged. I took some pics, maybe you guys will know if its engaged or not. Let me know what you think.

 

thats cool that there was a locker in it. but like you said wonder if its any good. think it might be a ratchit locker or somerthing like that?

 

It definately is a ratchet style, like a lock right or something. Im just wondering if its in the right position and not locked. I'm hopefully trading it to jonny for his stock 4.10 diff in his 83, I just dont have the money to regear the rear right now.

 

Yup thats a lockright style, should work fine. You can't really unlock them without installing them, and using the tires to spin one side.

 

So, looking at the pics, is it disengaged?

 

I don't think you can tell whether its engaged from a picture, but it should be since it needs the weight of the vehicle to unlock it.

 

Its engaged, it only opens up when the right forces are applied to it. When driving with one, if you let off the gas or press in the clutch in a turn it will unlock. But if you hammer down on the throttle into a turn, it will remain locked.

Yeah, we got a deal. How bout I trade the open 4.10 and the knuckle service seals/gaskets for it? When I get down there today we should make absolutely sure your rear is 4.10 and not 4.30 or somethin though.

 

yeah, here is an easy test, lets get that third in, and put her up in 4X4, see what happens.

 

Better test... with the truck in neutral lift one of the rear tires in the air. Mark the pinion flange and the diff housing for a starting point, and chalk a vertical line on the tire. Now spin the tire 2 full revolutions while counting how many times the drive shaft turns. You will be able to tell if it was just over 4, 4.3, 4.5 ect.

 

Only if you floor it in 4 lo on dry cement.

 

Yeah, he did that but only 1 revolution of the tire and got almost exactly 2 turns of the driveshaft. We just gotta do it again 2 revs cause of the open diff.

Already got them out, but thanks for the video. Got one side rebuilt, all back together, would have had the passenger side done by now, BUT, the trunion bearings came out in pieces, and left the inners stuck on the end caps, so those are at the machine shop for removal, heading back out to finish cleaning parts and pull the 3rd out of the 83.

 

IT'S DONE!!! Finally finished and test drove her, no leaks and steers like a dream now. Thanks to everyone who helped!

 

Also, the 4X4 works great now, too.
