Birfield Problem

I must be missing something, but as I have seen in every SA rebuild thread, the birfield is just supposed to come out of the axle housing. I can't get it past the knuckle bearings and out past the knuckle. From everyones pic's it appears that once the spindle is removed, it should come out. Well, I called it quits for the night before I get too mad at it and break something. Hopefully someone can help me, this has me perplexed.

Not sure what is going on. I would rotate the drive shaft back and fourth a few times. If it is past that point and out of the gears it should slide right out.
look here https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f152...31/index6.html It is the reverse of that or check this one.. https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f115...ctures-180536/

Thank god you answered, i was looking at your posting from 09 in someones thread, using it to figure it out.

Seems to be that it is hitting the outside edge of where the knuckle bearing holes are, like the ends are bent up, which by looking at the position of the holes is physically impossible. I tried yanking, pulling them out at an angle, everything, but they just wont come out! Im going to get in the shower real quick, the mrs wont let me sit on the couch, lol. I'll be back in a few and find a pic of an open axle with the birf still in it, i cant take a pic causei seran wrapped the axle ends, expecting rain tonight.

Make sure the flat spots are level, and twist it side to side a little as you pull. You might have a bent axle housing though.

seanmearse 03-03-2010 04:05 PM

is there flat spots on the birf? I must have really missed that. I'll be back in about 15-20, have to get in shower, need to sit on couch, lol.

toyospearo 03-03-2010 04:07 PM

yes the flat spots have to be together and level if they are and you are still having problems it sounds to me like there is something bent like Etype r said.
Look at my second link from above you can see the flat spots in the pics those have to line up in order for the axles to come out.

seanmearse 03-03-2010 04:23 PM

WOW, I am an idiot, i didnt even see the flat spots. The 20th pic down in the second thread you posted up showed it clear as day. So, you want the flat spots on top and bottom, correct?

toyospearo 03-03-2010 04:26 PM

yes they have to line up in order for the axles to slide out like butter. Move them back and fourth till you get it but do it carefully. :bounce:

seanmearse 03-03-2010 04:32 PM

Is there something that i could break if i dont be careful, lol. I dont want to hurt it at all, but is there something prone to removal breakage?

toyospearo 03-03-2010 04:37 PM

There are always things you could fuggle up if you use too much force. I would just be careful not to mar or dig a grove in the axle housing. You don't want your new rebuild leaking as soon as you put the grease and gear oil in there.

Thanks Toyo, you saved me from having to smack him in the forehead with greasy hands when I get down there this weekend!

seanmearse 03-03-2010 04:44 PM

Sounds good, ill post up when (and if) i get them out, thank god Jonny is letting me borrow the third out of the 83, mine is gone, drained the fluid and guess what? Metal shavings and grey fluid.

Butt Nugget.

JonnyBoy 03-03-2010 05:11 PM

No 3rd from the 83 after that scathing remark! Or better yet, you get the welded 3rd from the rear of it...let's see you steer then!

seanmearse 03-03-2010 05:17 PM

im just curious to see what is going on in the 4runners front end, if its locked or what. And are you sure you dont mind if i get into the trail gear box?

JonnyBoy 03-03-2010 05:32 PM

Sounds like you're gonna need the stuff, go for it. Should only need the knuckle rebuild kit though, right? There's other stuff in the box too.

seanmearse 03-03-2010 05:39 PM

yeah, just that portion. Is there bearings for the knuckles?

JonnyBoy 03-03-2010 05:48 PM

Yep, it's the full kit with bearings. I forgot to get a few things from them anyhow.

seanmearse 03-03-2010 05:54 PM

cool. I am going to wait until you get here to pull the third from the 83. Gives me a couple days to clean up the 4runners parts.

seanmearse 03-04-2010 09:23 AM

WOW, you guys were right, lined up the flat spots, slipped right out. Took all of litterally 5 minutes. See, I should have posted up on here before taking the two hours to try and figure it out, once again, YT comes through! Thanks again Toyo and E TypeR.
