bad mileage = motor running bad?

Okay so heres the deal i recently swapped in a 22re into my 84 yota. When the motor was in the 87 it would about 20-25 mpg since i put it in the 84 im getting about 8-9 mpg which makes no sense at all. the truck has a 4:10 gear ration and im only running 31" tires so i doubt thats the problem the motor does not burn oil and the only thing it really needs is an alignment, any ideas?

not having it aligned can kill your gas mileage. what size tires were on the 87?

When you swapped motors did you put the injectors from the 84 engine into the 87 engine ?, if not that could be your problem. In 87 toyota changed the injectors (i can`t remember exactly what they did), i know 85-86 injectors are the same, but not sure about the 84 injectors. So try putting the 84 injectors into the new motor and see what happens.
