89 injection into an 84??

I got a line on an 89 4runner with a 22re and the clutch just went, the guy wants 300 bucks, I was thinking of putting its injection into my carbed 22r, how difficult is this swap? And how much gas mileage would I gain by it? I know it would bump me up about 15 horses, so has anybody done it?

Thanks

Kirby

I just did it to my 84. Swapping the wiring harness was kinda of a pain. You'll need the fuel tank, fuel line from tank to motor, wiring harness. How is the motor in the 89? I'd just swap motors too rather than convert your 22R over with the 22RE head and intake.

I recall mag artilces that did it.

obviously it bolts up.
BUT
as mentioned - need the tank and fuel lines - which are not likey to be rust free and easily xferred...

We just did it to tlake's 87 (91 efi to 87 22R)

We changed all the front and dash harness'. Changed the fuel tank and all the fuel lines. Also added A/C to his rig. Took a long time, but we also swapped the entire dashboard. (don't know if I would advise anyone to do that. lots of little mods to make fit, and now you have to open the doors to roll down the windows cause the dash is in the way)

My 22r had a rebuild done one it bottom up 3000km ago so not gonna be swapping it for the 22re(350,000km+).

Did you notice a diffence in gas mileage? I am getting pretty good now but with fuel prices any improvment is a good thing!

Never mind, just checked out your thread, guess you wouldn't have noticed yet. Nice build!

Thanks

Kirby

Tlake is driving his to Montana this weekend. IIRC, the gas tanks were different (he got a 4runner tank first, and it didn't fit). I don't know if the mileage is any better, but he says it runs GREAT. Much better than with the carb.

Mine runs great as well. Off-road, it's quite a bit better. I have noticed a HP increase coming from an 85 pickup with a 22R and quite a few miles to a newly rebuilt 22RE.

I haven't had a chance to figure the fuel mileage. I'm running 31's so it throws the spedo off anyways.

Talked to tlake last night (before the power went out) and he says he has not checked the mileage yet. Also said he didn't know if he would do it again to another rig.....was a lot of work

It was a lot of work, I'll second that! Rebuilding the engine at the same time took alot of my time as well. I hand cleaned every single bolt in and on that engine.

I was very close to swapping in a 3RZ from a tacoma but was scared of the wiring. Next time, I'm doing it!
