New to the forum here. Well, turns out I was able to buy back my truck that i owned back in my teen years. It's an 84 Xtra Cab 4x4, 22R, 5spd. A relative has owned the truck for the last 15 or so years and it's seen some better days. I'm sure I will pick some of your brains over the process and I'll thank you in advance. So for now my plan is somewhat of a full restoration with some frame repair and rust abatement. My plan is to replace the swiss cheese called a bed with a full fiberglass from toyotafiberglass. Get the motor back to where it was when I last owned it. Repaint, and new suspension/rebuild of front and rear axles. The truck does run, albeit not great. PO replaced the 32/36 weber that was on it with a 38 knock off. During that process his "Mechanic" hacked the factory ignition control and coil and put 1 in from a Chevy of some flavor(said he couldn't find a replacement, wtf). And I just replaced the shifter seats with the Marlin crawler kit. So first few items on the list are carb replacement with a genuine weber 32/36 and possibly the Offy manifold. Somehow find the connectors to put a factory ignition system back in, and replace exhuast. Is there anyone who has used the LCE exhuast? It says 85-94 I believe, but will it work on the 84? Also looking at using OME springs for the suspension, any recommendations on spring rate Med or Heavy?
You just did what every car guy talks about "Man, I wish I'd never gotten rid of ____, and would love to have that one back." I'm restoring the exact same truck - '84 Xtra cab, 4x4, 22R...; picked it up this summer. So, I'll follow along.
I think I just bought the truck the PO will soon say "Man I wish I'd never gotten rid of that truck." He asked me to send him update pics on the restoration.
I'm glad I was able to get it back, and it should be done soon enough that my kids will be able to start driving the same truck I did. Luckily the bed is the part that's the worst and replacing it with fiberglass will solve that issue forever. Super excited to get this thing started, I have noticed so far though that quite a few of the interior parts and such are difficult to find replacements for, like the rubber shift boots for the body....almost non existent
