85 Front caliper rebuild

While tearing down front axle on my 85 p/u to change inner seals, noticed that the right caliper is leaking around the inside pistons. How hard are the calipers to rebuild and should a kit be available at the local parts store?

Also, what has anyone done to prevent the breather on the front axle from plugging with mud? I believe this is the reason for the inner seals leaking.

TIA!!

Might be easier to just put on a rebuilt caliper instead of rebuilding the one you got. Local parts place can get either.

Also you might think about upgrading to vented rotors and the bigger IFS calipers for your 85 SFA while you are doing things. I have those parts on my website under "brakes".

Front differential breather mod...a search will tell you what you want to know.

Just change both sides, I didnt and wound up with the passenger caliper causing braking problems where the truck would pull when you braked.

Remancalipers from an auto parts store will be fine, yota OEM will be $$$$.

84 SFA to "bigger brakes" you'll need/want:

Vented rotors
"finned" IFS V6 calipers (4 big pistons instead of 2 small and 2 big like SFA) loaded
1.5" wheel spacers to clear them (on most rims)
SS braided extended brake lines

If you have any specific questions let me know as all this stuff is on my website.

i found the same thing when i took the front end apart on my 85 4r - weeping from the pistons on one caliper. i went to NAPA, it was only around $45 for a reman, so i did em both.

i didn't do this, but it might be a good time to bleed the rear break lines out thoroughly (ie, full fluid replacement) before you do the whole front job (and then do them as thoroughly). just a thought.
