As has been said, I think 500 is fair for a factory straight axle, especially if the frame aint rotten, I bought mine for a grand as it sits now, and it had frame issues but had just been welded up. Spots to watch out for, and I believe mines almost as worst as it gets before it breaks in half, are: under the doors, itll get a small hole and work its self into a total split all the way around (mines like that now), on the back half where the frame curves up, where the shackle brackets are, itll start cracking there, thats where the most damage happens, because of the flex and stress on that part, it will cave in, from the arch all the way back to the tube that goes across, up front i havent seen any rust out, due to most high mileage yoters leaking oil... also in the back where the spare tire hangs, the tubes that go across rust out, but im not sure how much support those offer anyway. I think thats it, i cant think of anything else im fixing on mine lol. But also as said previously, in florida you cant touch a straight axle toyota for less than 1500 running, 800 non running, people run hunting dogs down here, and the toyotas and nissans are highly popular for that, they are the only ones that fit down a pine row, and nissan doesnt have a straight axle so...

$500 for an 85 xtra cab in Florida is a great deal, I just paid $3000 for mine a few months ago, but its in great shape... just some body cancer. If you don't get it, post the info.

Edit: OliveYoter is right about the dog hunters, me or any of my hunting buddies would scoop that truck up in a second to use as a hunting truck.

That's not a bad idea. You should look into what all that involves, and let us know. I might be interested in doing something like that. I can't say it's even possible, but I guess it's worth a shot.

propane?

The EFI became an option in 4x4 in 85 and in the 2x4 in 87. I'm not sure when they totally ditched the carb though.
