85 4runner fuel pump always running? rail not holdin pressure?
hello everyone,
So my 1985 4runner (22re) I think im having problems with my fuel pressure regulator not keeping the rail pressurized. So I rebuilt my injectors and went to pressurize the system so i can verify any leaks and was going to jump the fuel pump, when I put the key in the on position the fuel pump kicked on and keeps on running it will not shut off. Also as fast a fuel is coming in the rail its leaving back to the tank... Thanx for all your help ...
Its been a while since I posted anything but I finally got me a 4x4 toy again....

Might find out what is kicking the pump on. Perhaps it has been hard wired or the CO relay contacts are welded shut:

Or the AFM vane is stuck open or the Fc contact is always closed:

Fuel Pressure Regulator (FPR) works by always sending fuel back to the tank, it bleeds off anything over it's internal spring pressure back to the tank. Vacuum fitting on top of it changes that pressure (more vacuum = less pressure) and also crimping the return line will raise the pressure. Pressure changes can be heard as a change in the pitch of the hiss from the FPR. I drilled/tapped the back end of the fuel rail for a pipe thread fitting and screwed in an electronic pressure sender to measure pressure. Or you can rig up a test port with the cold start injector line/banjo bolt.

Thanx for the info, I found my problems and fixed it, first fuel reg is good, fuel pump is good, it was the dam afm wasn't closing all the way so it wasn't trippin the contact arm inside. I just bought the runner and been chasing down the very bad idle for a couple days going threw everything and then last thing I check is valve clearance and let me tell u it was tight i think the po went to adjust it an didn't have it tdc. The truck purs now, now I gotta put a new front main seal and it has a small crack in the timing cover I hope that's it.
