85 22RE engine code help 2...1...5...2
Hey guys, couldn't find enough info in other threads for this issue.
85 Toyota pickup with 90 22re recently swapped into it. 90' EFI was performing poorly so put my 85' EFI back on(engine did not bog with this 85' EFI). After this I had developed a bogging issue.. At 3500-4000rpm the engine bogs (come back to this later).
Had a genius moment and boosted my battery backwards. Thus I blew my original ECU (Part# 89661-35020) along with some fuses. Truck would turn over but would not get spark. Not sure if it was getting gas or not.
Replaced with ECU (Part# 89661-35110) from a 4 runner close in year. Truck fires up, but check engine light is now on. Check engine light only goes away when engine bogs (at 3500-4000rpm).
Before i replaced the ECU I could not get any check engine light at all, not running or with the diagnostic pins shorted. Now the engine light is always on. Now I get one when I short the diagnostic pins. You can see the code I'm getting in this video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P6Ka...ature=youtu.be
Looks like 2...1...5...2 then a five second gap and repeats.
I follow this guide
http://www.4crawler.com/4x4/CheapTri...des/#Early22RE
and it leads me to think my o2 and airflow sensors are pooched.
I have deleted my EGR valve and system, most vacuum lines. Not sure if these two sensors were part of this or if this is a new issue.
Has anyone had this engine diagnostic code or the bogging issue before?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
-Nathan

Haven't had those codes before but that's definitely 21 and 52, o2 sensor and knock sensor.
I don't think deleting the egr will cause this. (mine runs trouble free without it...) Thoughts on the bog... maybe timing or fuel starvation. I had a 4runner act like this when timing was seriously effed - it was like 10 degrees atdc.
Go through the standard tune up stuff first.

Also, I may be wrong but if memory serves me right those codes both mean the ECU is not seeing any signal at all, generally pointing towards wiring.
An O2 going bad shows up typically as a lean condition code 25. (failing o2 sends "lean" to computer which tries to enrich mixture. so you're running way rich but the ecu thinks you're lean.)

Hmm, so those codes are from a newer 22re ECU? Good to know I'm looking for a knock and not an airflow sensor.
The timing is set properly, was just checked ~200km ago. Will check it again though in case it was knocked off somehow. Could bogging like that be caused by a bad fuel filter? Maybe bad injectors, I'm not sure.
I'll take a video of the issue this evening.

Yeah those codes are from a newer ecu.
I haven't swapped motors before so I don't know for sure but I don't think you are supposed to mix and match ecu and harness like that. I think I've read should have harness/sensors from the same year as the ecu. i'm sure there's plenty of info on here though
