85' 22RE electrical chaos!

Story goes like this: I just had to have another yota, so I pulled an 85' runner off craigslist, that needed some TLC. Drove it maybe 10 miles and parked it to fix the main seal on the oil pump. once that was fixed, I went to fire it up, Nothing. Noticed alternator was quite hot so I pulled the battery. 6 months later, with a new alternator, I still cant get the beast to even cough.

Heres where it gets strange: It does have fuel AND spark. When cranking in couple second intervals you can smell gas at the tail pipe. Took the #1 plug out multiple times to check for spark, as I couldnt believe there was spark WITH the gas smell!!!

Any advice?! Anyone else have this issue? Thanks alot guys, hope I gave enough info!

If you have fuel and spark....check the timing? My buddys 86 4 runner sat in my yard for a week because he had the timing 180 out....Itll turn over but wont fire off. Just pull # 1 spark plug , put a long screw drive in there and get it to top dead center. MAKE SURE YOUR ON COMPRESSION STROKE. Set your distributor rotor to #1 and double check everything. Then try to fire it off. If that doesnt fix it pull your fuel line from the fuel rail and make sure theres fuel. Then make sure all your relays\fuse's are good...such as your efi relay\fuse.

excellent ideas. I did check the timing, simply to rule that at. I also checked the fuel at the return line, not the rail, and there sure was fuel. I didnt check any of the Relays/fuses though. thanks for the ideas!

I'm sure you've probably checked already along with the timing but make sure you have the correct firing order.
