84 toy p/u vibration

Just before I shift gears my whole truck feels like it is vibrating, That is just before I shift into 2nd, 3rd, 4th gear. In idle there is no vibration or when I am increasing in speed on each gear. I do have sloppy u's. I hear them clinking. Could this actually make the whole truck vibrate? If it is the u's does anyone know an approximate cost? I just bought the truck a few months ago and it had been sitting in the desert for about a year before that. It is a 2 wheel drive, xtra cab.
Thank you for any help.

P.S. This is not a little vibration, this is a huge vibration. It just happened a few days ago and I have drove it once since it started.

after I wrote this I drove it and It seems all the vibration is when driving in the 3rd and 4th gears, first and second gears it is not noticeable. There is alot of noise also, maybe a roar? its hard to describe.

It sounds like your u joints are gone. You can just wait and you will know for sure (when you are stuck on the side of the road). Or get some new ones...they are 14 bucks at autozone, I think they were about 60 at Toyota...

Thankyou very much for replying. Unfortunately I will have to get them done at the shop so I imagine I will be paying through the nose. Its hard to believe that u's could cause all of this. Its pretty scarey to drive like it is. No, I wont continue to drive it as in a 115 with no air its no fun to get stuck at the side of the road. I really appreciate your reply as I didnt want to go in to a auto shop without a idea, they already take advantage as it is.
Thanks again.

I just had mine done. One thing to remember when replacing or having the U's replaced is that the drive shaft should be machine balanced. Some shops will throw them on a lathe to check for trueness of the shaft before any work is done and then again after work is completed. Though your issue appears to be U's only, some vehicles have damaged shafts too. The vibration is unbelievable.....

There are few improvements one can make to a vehicle that will make such a difference as a silky smooth new drive-line.
