84 runner dies at random???

So this problem showed up a few months ago and I am lost.. I have a bone stock 84 runner with a 22r and stock carb. I jumped in and like always it fires right up, I let it warm up before taking off get a few miles from home and it will die and it sounds like it is coughing through the air filter housing and I can smell a slight hint of gas. So first and easy thing I did was to change the fuel filter after making sure all my vacuum lines were hooked up. Now there are some vacuum lines that go nowhere but they have been like that since I bought the truck 6+ months ago and this problem recently showed up. Now when the truck dies it takes a minute of cranking it and it will fire right up but just die a few minutes later. Now it died on my today I get it home and have it sitting out front running while I move my cars around to get it into the garage and it died I finish moving cars jump in it and it fires right up. I am getting ready to go out and check all my grounds and any other wire I can find if it is not that what else could it be? Fuel pump looks to be fairly new how often do they go bad? Any and all help would be appricated.

Thanks

Sounds more like a problem with the coil to me. Sometimes when they start going bad it will only show up when they get hot. It's not that expensive of a problem to troubleshoot. So even if thats not what it is you don't have alot in it. Either way it sounds like something that is only showing up when it gets hot.
Just my thoughts.

Yes it will only die or shut off after I have been driving it and it is up to temp. I have to go tot he parts store today so I'll see if they have a coil.

I used to have this problem in my 83 4x4 pickup and it turned out to be the Fuel Filter..

That's what I changed first since it was easy and cheap and that did not fix it.

You said it sounds like its coughing through the intake? If its back firing throught the intake then then you need to look at timing, carb adjustment, spark, idle speed...... tune-up?

My next step when I get some time off from work was to change out the cap, rotor, and plugs. I am leaning toward the carb since it is original. What would it be on the carb? should I think about rebuilding it?
