84 4runner, ls1 swap....

Well basically I want it for all all around vehicle. Something that is capable of some great wheeling (i won't really do sand, but mud/rocks/hills etc...) I want it to have more than enough power. I want it to be able to tow a trailer w/a quad or a couple bikes and also be full of people/gear in the cab part of the 4runner and still be able to make it up freeway hills at speed w/out having to floor the damn thing the whole time and feeling like oh am I going to make it up w/speed.
As far as gas mileage, I don't care if i get about 17-18 or so w a little gear and a couple people in the truck. I'm not looking for something that gets 30, that's for sure.

Sell it to someone that wants that engine and buy an 80 Land Cruiser. You will be money ahead.

ok, so I think i've narrowed down the choices then. I either want to put an efficient v6 in it or if possible convert the 84 engine in my 4runner to fuel injected and build the engine up w/some upgrades in order to get the most power of out it.

If you swap in an LS1 you will need motor / trans / t-case (which you knew), but add to the list: axles that can take the power and all the wiring, mounting points and a lot of time and money.
If you go with something that is more common ( Toy 3.4, Chevy 4.3, 350) then you get the benefit of knowledge of others and 'kits' that are available. You won't have to fabricate everything. And, most importantly (in my mind), you won't be 'guessing' with everything and it's placement.
The most important thing to remember is to take lots and lots of pictures and post them for us.

for sure. I will def. take a lot of pictures. I'm just trying to find the best choice for a swap. Fuel efficiency and power. It's going to be EFI and i'm thinking a 6 cyl. The chevy 350 would be cool though power, but no mileage at all.
Anyone know if an 84 22r can be converted to EFI? I'm thinking of building up that motor w/better parts to produce more power.

yeah i wouldent go for the suped up 22-re GREAT motor but i mean comon the lc engineering website has motors that are friggin 5 grand and make 150HP, i do kinda like the lexus motor idea tho, the 1uzfe, found one on ebay for 500 bucks, just dunno the tranny options like mentioned above, and like everyone els said if you do the LS1 TAKE ALOT OF PICS

I'd like to do the ls1, but it seems w/that much power and a truck this size is just not a good idea. I think the motor would just tear the truck apart. I'm thinking the 3.4 would be a better option although I do like the ls1 idea too, but it doesn't seem feasible.

the swap was not that hard.. It seems extream and overwhelming before you start, but once you get going its not bad. Go to techinfo.toyota.com for all the wiring info and check the 3.4 swap section in the forums for all the other info on the swap. As far as the power goes, i'm running 4.56 gears 5spd and 265/75/r16 10 ply tires.. and i'm still spinning tires. I think they call that having your cake and eating it too.
