84 22re overheating

I have an '84 4runner with a 22rec engine.
It's overheating. I'll drive it a a few miles and it's getting up near the red.
I've changed the water pump & the thermostat (and currently running w/o thermostat). It has plenty of coolant.
I ran the truck the other day for about 5 minutes w/ the radiator cap off and watched the fluid, I saw no movement.
The radiator doesn't seem to be getting as hot as it should and my flex-a-lite electric fan isn't being activated by the thermal sensor.
The oil looks good, no milkshake there.
The coolant in the radiator looks like it should, no obvious problem there.
I over heated it about a week ago, maybe something got damaged then?
Any ideas?

Are you losing coolant?

Any signs of color in the exhaust?

the radiator could be clogged, or possibly a blockage somewhere else in the system.

annother thought, are you sure its really overheating and not just the gauge to being messed up? since i installed an aftermarket water temp gauge i realized how inconsistent and inaccurate my stock gauge was.

not loosing coolant that can tell
nothing odd with the exhaust either
I changed the lower radiator hose last week and in doing so drained the radiator, so i doubt that the radiator is clogged since all the coolant came out.
Also, me heater blows cold... so maybe blockage somewhere in the system?
When i changed the water pump it didn't look to clean in there...

I suppose it could be the gauge, but that means something changed in the last two weeks to cause the gauge to be off. In the last two weeks all I've done is install the flex-a-lite fan, did my brakes, changed the lower radiator hose upgraded the intake and installed a thermostat (it was missing, so i installed it, since then pulled just to ensure it isn't a problem).

flush your heater core, that might help a little. i doubt its overheating, its prob the gauge. double check though
