82 to 85 interchangeable

Hey guys i had a guy this weekend offer to sell me an 82 toyota pickup that he says runs and drives but the clutch is shot in it or something like that. he says it has about 8" of lift with 5.29's and lockers front and rear. All for $400
My question is will the axles and lift work under my 85?

As far as I know, yes. The major mechanical difference is the transmission. The crossmember sits about an additional foot forward on 79 -83 trucks and I believe the entire tranny is useless. If you bolt it up to the motor and swing the ass-end upward to the frame, you'll get a sweet little suprise. Needless to say I was out about 150 bucks after that

You should be good on everything else. Electrical stuff will probably be different under the dash.

I have nothing to say about the leaf springs. Toyota was totally unprepared for the 4Runner's "Saggy Ass Syndrome" to begin with, so I can't imagine there was a whole lot of updated between 83 and 84.

Hell yes they will work thats a sweet deal. The axles alone without lockers are worth that.. what kind of lockers are they running?

axles and lift will interchange no problem 79-85

I have a W56 in my 79 and the cross memeber mounts did not match i just made new mounts and shortened the rear drive line no big deal really.

good buy what a deal! 8" of lift? what kind of lift? is it a combination of suspension & body?

i am lifted 4" and i would not go any higher. i stuff 36's and still rub sometimes and have trimmed out as much as I am willing too, any more trimming will require petal relocation fabrication.

Im not sure of anything really. I kinda half believed him at the time, he was talkin about havin a 2.4 stroked out to a 2.6 pushin 200HP so i was kinda skeptical, but the more i thought about it i thought well hell it would't hurt to take a look. Im gonna call him tomorrow and try to go look at it. I'll snap some pictures of it. i don't know about the lift but i agree i don't want that much lift on mine either. I was all saved up to buy the 4" trail gear lift and then i got accepted into nursing school so i've been tryin to find a cheaper alternative to suffice for a little while.

Yes that truck is a mess looks like its been parted out some it has much potential as a weroius trail rig.

but you are after the 5.29, the lockers, lift, and axles.

5.29 set up with lockers are worth the $400

the lift looks like a procomp so its crap you could run it for a while or make your money back selling it out lift springs, shocks, extended brake lines, z-bar, LSPV bracket should get you some cash or run it

the front axle is worth money sheesh those hubs, birfs, knuckles are worth at least as trail spares.

some one wants that poo pipe flat bed got a good bill there

OR build it and beat the hell out of it !

MOTOR? TRANS? still there its worth the $400 IMO

I told him i would probably come over one weekend and pull the thirds out and see if i could tell if it even had lockers or gears for that matter. He said he had seen the truck on 40's before he bought it. He didn't know if it pulled them but they had been on there. How hard would that be to pull the thirds and check out. I've never really done much with axles and such. oh and the motor and trans are still there as well.

to find out what gears are in it you could jack the backend up and spin the driveshaft. the driveshaft should spin 5.29 times to 1 rotaition of the tire.

to see if it has a locker spin a tire and see if the other one spins the sameway. if they both spin the sameway it has a locker or might be welded. if they spin different ways its open. to see if its a locker or welded spin the tire agen and yank the tire your spining the other way. if it clicks and the other tire keeps spining it has a locker. if it stops when you yank it and wount diconect from the other tire its welded or a spool.

hope this helps you out some. it would be a pain to take it apart to find out it wasnt what you thought. i would still tack it a part but i would test it frist so i know before i get in to it that it might be something you wount.

Pulling the rear is cake unbolt the brake lines, unscrew the 4 nuts attaching each axle drum, undo the e-brale cable, unscrew the small diff nuts, take the d-line off. pull the axles out until they drop out of the 3rd then pull out the third sometimes it needs to be smacked with a dead blow to break the rtv seal.

Pulling the front is a little harder, shoudl get a FSM or a chiltons to get the idea

now you can figure out what i thas without pulling it apart. to verufy before you buy sort of thing

spin the wheel to determine it has locker try grabbing one to see if it unlocks or stays fulltime locked.

you can mark the tire and drive shaft with a white marker and spin the tire counting the revolutions of the tire and the drive shaft then dividing the numbers you may want to do this up front since its a PITA

4.10 is 41/10
4.11 is 37/9
4.37 is 35/8
5.29 is 37/7
