last week it read normal after i hit a bump, then it went back up after another. i must have a loose or dirty connection somewhere.

Was that an OEM part? I took off and cleaned all my senders during my HG installation and there is some "wiggle" on both the green and brown sender units (the plastic parts), so wondering if it's an easy/cheap replacement if they are indeed broken?
