22r rough idle after downhill

84 4runner. So I had this rig running great so we load everyone up and go for a ride in the mountains. make it to the top just fine. on the way back down it starts to backfire a lot which I thought was because of the engine braking. After about 2 miles I notice it is starting to idle rough so i slow down and it stalls. It also started to smoke quite a bit when I was driving down the mountain but it cleared up after a few miles on level ground. So I limp it home and let it cool down. Start it back up and it is still running rough. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Joe

the smoke was gray I think. I was on a dry dusty road so it was kind of hard to tell. It looks like the float level is high in the sight glass. I was also wondering how to hook up my tach dwell meter? It is the older style with 2 alligator clip connectors, one for the battery and one for the coil. thanks, Joe

last stupid question of the day. On these aisin carbs there are 2 choke plates that work independent of each other. one is fully open when the choke is off and the other is only slightly open. the one that is slightly open actually closes as throttle is applied. Is this how it is supposed to work? I have worked on ford carbs in the past and they use a single choke plate which is fully open when the engine is warm. thanks again, Joe

The yota is running like a champ but using quite a bit of oil. I think All the smoke coming downhill is probably from engine braking. The compression is pushing oil past the rings or maybe valve seals. The head was rebuilt but the shop did forget to seal up the that cover on the back of the head which turned into a big coolant leak, so I suppose they could also have done a poor job on the valve stem seals. What should I look for when I pull the valve cover to check the seals, or should I just get a compression tester and do a leak down test? thanks, Joe
