I did try searching first...but think maybe theres too many questions. I picked up an 84 pickup to beat around a while ago and lost a head on with the neighbors one ton. anyway, while i had everything apart, i figured a rebuild was in order. this is where the confusion began...

it is registered as an 84
the plate on the firewall said its a 22r
the guy i bought it from said it was original motor
the machine shop said the motor had never been machined
after i got the block cleaned up there was a 20r stamped on it
heads have round intake (also 20r if i am not mistaken)
ive heard that the 20r was not offered in 1984 pickup
im pretty sure i know the answer, but why for the love of mary, joseph, and the shepherds would one swap a 22r for a 20r!!!!!!!

could there have been some mix up at the factory, or did previous owner take me for a ride?
and more importantly will the things like cam, cam gear, header, that i ordered prior to finding this out still work when it goes back together?

might be a "hi brid" 20r head will fit on that 22r block

agreed with above a hybrid. The 20r head on 22r block gives a little better compression whitch means more power.

 

but would the 22r have the 20r stamping on the block?

 

82 pickup in my shop has a 22R. Factory.
