Hi,
long time reader-first time poster...

I had to sell my Tacoma b/c I broke my leg playing hockey.
Now I am back on my feet, and noticed what appears to be a nice '85 4runner for sale.

Any input as to what I should look for with regard to common problems/issues, or things you would ask the seller? I am not familiar with this gen of Toyota, and the 22re engine, and accompanying tranny.
Or worse case- how expensive is an engine rebuild/swap...

For 10k you shouldn't have to worry about anything, and from the looks of it you wont. As far as price goes if your going to wheel it look for something cheaper, if you want a daily driver that is super reliable and easy to maintain and you have 10k burning a hole in your pocket i say go for it.

Its clean, but 10k? Seems pretty steep. Not really alot done to it to warrant that. Timing chain was replaced, but no rebuild? I think you can do better.

Thanks for the imput thus far...the fella says it's running strong, no oil burn, but I'm going to have it inspected- and won't be paying 10k...I'll offer...
I guess as I'm going from an '03 Tacoma, I'm just wondering what the typical lifespan of a maintained 22re is...and then factor that in.

Depends on prior maintenance and how she was driven. That truck in california would sell for maybe 4500 bucks.

Like seanmearse said it depends on what maintenance was done by the PO but the 22re is a strong running motor and are easy and fairly cheap to repair. A good long block would cost you about $2500 but a rebuild kit would run $350ish so depending on your abilities it can be cheap to rebuild as for tranny and tcase they are pretty bullet proof. My tranny just went bad at 275,000 miles and I was able to find a replacement for only $350 the Tcase should hold up to almost anything (extreme rock crawling being an exception that can shorten its life) Then you have the axles and I don't know about the SFA as I've never owned one but they are probably pretty stout and will serve you well with proper maintenance.

That's my $.02 as I have two 20+ Year old trucks and for 6 months drove one 200 miles round trip 3 days a week with no isues.

And let me also add that $10k is a little steep!...a LOT steep!

Hehe, general consensus is that 10k is too much, even if it is in Canadian $(were at about 93cents to usd)...at least no has much in the way of negative re thr truck itself. I was half expecting something along the lines of the 22re being underpowered or something

hell i can get an '85 4runner about 100 miles away for $4700..and its BUILT..even has a 350/NV4500 combo..sits on brand new 37" IROKS..has 5" marlin crawler suspension crossover, dual t-case's, dirty 30's..and half an exo.lol

How can you say its underpowered its a 4cly in a truck you shouldn't expect to go 100mph it would be nice to pull all the hills at 70 and with stock tires on it you can do it or regeared you can do it but you are buying a truck that is legally old enough to drink.

Like I said I would drive mine 200 miles a day and that was over a mountain pass and it did well on the steepest hill I would slow down to 60-65 but was driving in a truck I loves I didn't really care that I was getting passed by the cars as long as I could pass a semi I was happy.

So it really depends on what you want out of the truck. A good driver/wheeler then its got plenty of power. If you want to tow then not so much

The fellow with this truck emailed me saying the only issue he perceives with the truck is the "tenshioner pulley" making abit of noise, but working...I'll do the research on this...

Try like $6500 for it, and not a penny more. That is more reasonable for that runner. I don't care what work you said you did, you never get back out of it what you put into it. Anyway just because he built it the way he wants doesn't mean its the way you want. You will want to change things after you buy it. It always happens and to all of us. LOL. Nothing will change that, at least for me. Good luck

This guy is being stubborn- like you said , he is trying to get back what he put into it...maybe I can wait him out...my options would open up if the government didn't make cross-border shopping such a pain...

i would say he is high if he thinks he is gonna get 10,000 . im in des moines iowa. and i buy alot of toyota and do a fix her or there and resale for a profit. I just bought a wayyyyyyy nice 86 for 800$ also bought a 88 ext cab truck for 600 , tiny bit of rust on the bed. but frame was the best i had ever seen. still had the rubber coating on it. just my Food for thought.

as far as the what he put into it. i always tell me that are selling something that has put alot of money into it. Look at it this way. if you didnt have those parts in it. it wouldnt run!. also more then likely i could of got the part for cheaper and put it in for cheaper. I always refer back to a house i bought in ks. The lady wanted 1000$ more then what i had offered cause she filled up the propane tank. i looked her in the eye and said welp take it out. lol stuff like that you cant really expect to get full amount back. Tires i would say yah you could.

$8000 isn't bad... But I would try for $7000 with that smitty built rear bumper. That thing screams for a better front and rear bumper
