Other than this you can try to find a used unit on Ebay or try Jim's Toyota Parts. https://yodajims.com/

Hello Monsterman, Did you ever get an igniter for your 1985 22RE? I'm in the same boat as you and still trolling ebay and RockAuto not sure if I need to spend so much or if some of the RockAuto parts are compatible. Appreciate your response.

Good luck with ignitor

I have found no note worthy igniters for your Application. Had the same issue 4 months ago. Tried just about everything, even attempted retrofitting a different module. It didn’t function as planned. The igniter you are in search of is a very sophisticated one especially for its time. It is the ignition computer for those systems. I lucked out and was able to find a used one out of state that got shipped to me and functioned. Warning to all always have the battery disconnected when doing any work around or with the igniter. They are very temperamental and it doesn’t take much to fry them. I am still in search of an electronic parts store where I can find or order some of the internals on my old igniter. Attempting to rebuild it. If I find this solution. I may be able to help those in the future because I will rebuild them as a side gig

Hello Chuck, Appreciate your reply. I also found a used igniter in Colorado so am having it shipped expedited USPS so should be here in a few days. I also found 3 or 4 similar igniters on ebay, but the cost plus shipping was pretty high as I'm in British Columbia and the Canadian dollar is not worth much. I did read a post where someone used an inexpensive GM igniter and retrofitted it to his 22RE with a new resister.

The GM module retrofit only works on the 22R (carbureted) engine. The 22RE’s igniter sends a signal to the PCM to inform it of where the crank is using the ignition of each cylinder as the reference. The first crank sensor if you will. With this signal the PCM fires the injectors at the proper time. Without the signal(pulsing signal) the PCM will not fire the injectors. So to do the retrofit you would have to downgrade to a carburetor as well. Hey If you want a present send me your email. I tried to post here but file is too big. It is the full service manual for this engine series 22r,22RE,22tre and I think diesel specs are in it too. It’s the dealer mechanic manual. With it there is nothing you can’t do or figure out if you are a mechanic minded and capable person

Hello Chuck, Good advice on the GM retrofit and I found lots of other igniters that would work for the 22R but they didn't look right for the 22RE. I should send a big thank you to Monsterman for recommending Jim's Toyota Parts as they were very helpful and fired off a used igniter and coil to me right away.

I would really appreciate getting the full service manual as only the Haynes came with my truck. Please send it to:

that 53 ex igniter is also used on the '86 22re, it's been OOS for quite awhile now, here is a list of equivalent part numbers i posted, that you can also search for: https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f116...-motor-305381/

i put in a stock notification at rockauto and one finally came up, so i got lucky... at the minimum, i'd suggest that everyone get a junkyard backup while they are still available.

i tore my dead 53 ex apart, it's not a rebuildable item.
