How do I know if certain wheels will work with my truck?...the front hubs and what not.

Any particular rims your looking at?

 

I'm not really concerned about lug pattern...more of how deep the back of the rim is. To fit my 84 straight axles up front.

Its called backspacing if you want to research it

 

Factory for what?... For instance stock 1990 4x4 will not fit my front without rubbing.

 

3 3/8" is toyota factory solid axle wheel backspacing . 1986 and up toyota IFS wheels have a back space of over 4 inches and will rub the front without wheel spacers. if you have cross over steering IFS wheels will work and not rub

Not necessarily, even with a conversion to IFS calipers and FJ rotors some may rub the caliper.

Best way to make sure a rim will fit is a 10 minute test fit..

 

This is my first post on yotatech. I've done so much work to my truck through this site, its really been a great resource!

I recently finished the v6 caliper/fj rotor upgrade on my 85 SFA 4runner and current 15x8 3.75" bs wheels will not clear the caliper face. I knew this would most likely happen after reading through the forums.

I would rather buy new rims then run spacers on the front. I've read through explanations about backspacing and offset. My question is if my calipers extend out 1/2" would I need wheels with a larger bs like 4" or do I need a wheel with enough negative offset about -13mm, which as I understand would create a larger "dish" to clear the face of caliper? I have to order rims to test fit and need to know exactly what I need.

 

I just run 1.5" spacers, which matches the IFS rear I put in.

People seem to be split 50/50 on spacers. Some love them and some hate them. My rig is my DD and I wouldn't mind putting some better looking rims if I could find them for $50-$70 a pop but the more I look and ask around it seems the grinder, spacers or both.

I take it you like your spacers? Did you ever run the spacers before your rear was done and if so did you notice anything different like the tracking of the truck or wear of the tires? I have the TG spacers in my shopping cart but am hesitant to pull the trigger just yet. Even if I don't have the IFS rear, would you recommend the 1.5" spacer? I would like to do the conversion but it would be a while before it gets done.

I'm probably overthinking this whole thing. I appreciate the response.

 

there's no reason to be scared of running spacers, if installed correctly you should have no problems.
