What's the best muffler for 20R?

Hey, new guy here. First post....

I recently acquired a 79 long bed 4x4. It is in need of a muffler. What muffler do you guys recommend? I don't want it tooo loud. A nice, somewhat deep tone if possible. Not 'buzzy' like some Flowmasters I've heard on some 22r's.

thanks

i'd go with a generic turbo muffler, it won't be too loud if you don't up your pipe size drastically.

I used a tubo thrush muffler from summit racing on my 80 mini I beleive the inlet was 2 1/4 not sure, sounds good and not too wanna be too fast/furious for me. Cost was around $25 not a bad investment imho.

summit makes a low buck muffler that sounds pretty good...

another option would be this chambered muffler from them...a touch more in price ($32 before shipping), but probably worth it if you want a deeper sound.

one more step up from summit would be this fully welded chambered muffler ($37 before shipping).

Im wondering the same thing, my buddies 22RE has a flowmaster and sounds o.k. but not worth spending that much on a muffler. I have a Cherry Bomb "Turbo" oval muffler(not a glasspack) that I bought for $30, It doesn't sound too great.. low tone and about the right noise level but sounds like a forklift, no mean sound to it at all. Im going to try a Flowtech "Raptor", going for $20 at a local auto parts store.. if it doesn't do the trick il just throw it on my car because it needs a new muffler anyway.

i know flowmasters are expensive, but its hard to beat their sound. the only reason i suggested the summit mufflers is because of their similar design (especially the fully welded baffled mufflers). might be worth a shot, or they may still sound like a forklift. i had a 40 series on my 20r with a mild cam and no cat and it sounded mean...deep, hollow sound that some people even mistook for a v8. might be worth watching ebay for a take off flowmaster. good luck.

If you want i can record a vid with sound of my flowmaster. I love it so much, i wouldnt trade it for anything. Its a pacesetter header with flowmaster 40 and 2.25 all the way back.

I say a stock muffler. Cheap, reliable, not noisy, lasts, and it WORKS!!!

the muffler is always the first thing to get hacked off my truck. i had a cherry bomb glasspack on my old 22re, was to ricey for me. i have a flowmaster 44 on my new 4runner and it is by far better, i also have the 3.4 now to so that is probably a major difference

o and the stock mufflers are a joke, they are so restricted and quiet.

Yeah, they are restricted, and quiet...but thats the point. I would like to see a race between someone with a stock muffler and an after market muffler on identical toyota trucks. It would probably be a tie.

I personally like my mufflers loud...but on a 4 banger theres nothing special. All your saying with a loud muffler is that your a menace to society. Good sounding and obnoxious are TWO totally DIFFERENT things. Ever seen a fart can hanging off the back end of a beat up Honda?

Try on of those turbo mufflers, I had them on my f150 and they sounded identicle to a flowmaster, but a fraction of the price

Sounds pretty good, Id add a resonator I think though. How much did you pay for a Flowmaster 40? Ive always been under the impression that they are pricey.

Its been 3 years but i think its around the $200 range... not 100% sure on that. The exhaust system is the only thing i didnt do myself on my truck since mine always just fall off. It was like $500 for the 4x4 shop to buy the header&muffler and install it all. Its all clamped and then welded and hasnt budged since.
