Weird noise in neutral, clutch pushed in goes away!
When my truck is in nuetral it makes this humming sound, if you push in the clutch the noise goes away. Clutch is in great condition, engages good and smooth. I am pretty sure that the transfer case is shot due to the excessive play that is in the front output shaft, I am replacing this in about a week. What I don't know is if the noise could be a throw out bearing possibly, or if it is a noise from the transfer case. Oh when you put the transfer case in neutral, and have the truck in neutral the noise is different, and not nearly as loud. I just would like to know if this could possibly be something to due with the clutch, so when I am putting the t-case in, I could fix the other problem at the same time, so I don't have to take it out twice. What do you think?

Throw out bearings make noise when the pedal is pushed in, that's the only time they move. So it's something other than the throw out bearing, maybe the crank pilot bearing or tranny input bearing. Or the transfer case.

When the clutch is pushed in there is no noise, when released and in neutral, sound like there is a nut bouncing around in the tranny. Weird thing is, two days ago the noise went away completly, but to my dismay came back today. Oh well, time to do some work!

Well, I think that it is definatly the input bearing. How long do you think I can drive on it the way that it is (it's freaking freezing in Wisconsin right now), and how much damage could be done if left to totally decinerate? I would like to fix it myself, any pointers? I have purchased the alldata.com program for my truck, but it is fairly useless when it comes to anything associated with the clutch, or transmission. (I've used that program for newer vehicles, and it is unbeliveable how great it is, but for this old of a truck, it was definatly a waste of money). I also have a Haynes manual, but everybody knows how useless those are. Thanks

I was playing with the truck again tonight and noticed that if you let the truck roll a little bit, stop it in a different spot, and let off of the clutch that the noise will go away. It seems to only make noise when in just the right spot, almost like once every rotation of the tire. I would think that if it were the input bearing, it would make noise anywhere the truck were parked? Somebody tell me if this makes sense, because now I am ready to rip out my hair, and don't want to put a new clutch in if not needed.

i exploded a t/o bearing because i figured it wasnt a big deal..........
IT Is. I the pilot bearing tough is generally quiet compared to the t/o bearing . soooooo, pedal in sweeeel- t/o, pedal out softer sweeeeel- pilot. dont let the t/o get too bad....they will blow up
